2026 Subaru Trailseeker: Rugged new EV teased ahead of global debut

Share

Subaru will expand its burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) lineup with the Trailseeker, an all-new model that’s set to be unveiled at the New York motor show this week.

The Japanese manufacturer announced the imminent reveal of the Trailseeker with a teaser image accompanied by a brief statement.

“Get ready to meet your newest adventure-ready sidekick from Subaru: the all-new 2026 Subaru Trailseeker EV SUV,” the release read.

“See it in person at the 2025 New York International Auto Show, coming soon.”

The Trailseeker will be displayed alongside the new Outback in New York, with the latter locked in for a 1:50am AEST debut on Wednesday, April 16.

Little is known about the new nameplate, although industry speculation suggests the Trailseeker will be built on the same platform as Toyota’s upcoming compact electric SUV.

Nikkei Asia has reported production of both new models will begin around January 2026 at Subaru’s Yajima plant in Japan, where up to 20,000 vehicles will be produced per month.

Both models will share key components, including technologies borrowed from the bZ4X and Solterra twins under the skin.

However, the Trailseeker will sport unique exterior and interior styling, with signature Subaru touches throughout.

Subaru plans to have eight EVs by 2028, though the Trailseeker will be just its second, launching four years after the Solterra. It’s expected to have an aggressive model rollout in the next three years to meet this target.

“Solterra’s our first foray into the EV space,” Subaru Australia general manager Scott Lawrence told CarExpert last week.

“We have good ambitions for future EVs, Subaru Corporation will have eight EVs by 2028. How we see them, when we see them, we have plans for [that], but there will be expansions across the EV range.

Though we’re yet to see the Trailseeker, reports have previously said Subaru’s upcoming EV will be sold in Japan, Europe and the US, making it a solid chance for Australian release.
